Is being a teenager the most Challenging thing in the world part 4
Friends... From the last post on this topic, this is the word I ended with. Friends are what teenagers hold dear. They are the people teens want to prove themselves to. Teenagers are in the age where emotions run faster than their though process. This means they base their judgements on how they feel, not what they think and this can be a bad thing. Friends are not bad and having a good set of friends can even make you be a better person but the problem is when they are not. This proposes a lot of problems as a crossroad emerges, do you stay with this group or abandon them??
For teens this is a challenge, if your aim is to prove yourself and make a statement, jumping ship and walking out is not an option and most of the time this becomes problematic. If someone or a group people expect you to constantly prove yourself and alter yourself to fit their standards then that is not a friends. The moment they will walk out of your life will come, sooner or later. Although you might tell a teen, the idea of being judged or feeling left out is more powerful than thinking about what your saying. This can lead to terrible and sometimes fatal ideas to be up which can be devastating. Secondly, short term friends are easy to abandon you once you are stuck, belittle you to make themselves feel better and become envious when you do better.
That is why it is crucial to convey the importance of good friendship and the dangers of bad friendship to teens. A friend is one who celebrates your success, lifts you up when you doubt yourself and the bad does the opposite. The prophet Muhammad (S.A.W) said:
A good and a bad companion are like the bearer of musk and the one who pumps out filth respectively. As for the bearer of musk, he will either give you a share, you will smell perfumed air, or you will purchase something from him as for one who pumps out filth, he will either burn your clothes or you will smell something filthy from him.
This highlights that a good friend leaves positivity and goodness in you and the bad one does the opposite. This is why in general should choose friends wisely. For teens however, since they are in an age where they are discovering themselves, it is important that we gives tips to help them identify good friends from the bad.
